Sun City is a landmark 1985 protest project created by Steven Van Zandt under the collective name Artists United Against Apartheid. It brings together an enormous lineup of over 50 artists from rock, hip-hop, jazz, soul, reggae, and Latin music to take a direct stand against apartheid in South Africa, specifically opposing the luxury resort “Sun City,” where many international performers were encouraged to play despite the cultural boycott.

The centerpiece of the album is the song “Sun City,” which blends rock and early hip-hop with a strong political message urging musicians to refuse to perform in South Africa under the apartheid regime. The rest of the record expands on that theme with collaborative tracks that mix spoken word, rap, jazz improvisation, and rock instrumentation, featuring contributions from artists like Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Miles Davis, and many others.

More than just a compilation, Sun City is widely regarded as one of the most explicitly political large-scale music collaborations of the 1980s.
