Mon Laferte’s 1940 Carmen is an intimate and deeply personal album that finds the Chilean-Mexican singer-songwriter exploring desire, love, loneliness, and transformation. Released in 2021 and largely written during a stay in Los Angeles, the record moves through alternative pop, rock, folk, and psychedelic influences while incorporating both Spanish and English lyrics. Featuring standout tracks such as “Algo es Mejor,” “Placer Hollywood,” and “Supermercado,” 1940 Carmen presents a rawer, more spontaneous side of Laferte, pairing her expressive vocals with warm, understated arrangements and emotionally direct songwriting.
