Cañonazo (60th Anniversary Edition) is a 2024 remastered reissue celebrating the landmark 1964 debut by Johnny Pacheco, widely recognized as one of the foundational figures of salsa and co-founder of Fania Records. Originally released as the first album on the label, Cañonazo captures the early evolution of Pacheco’s sound with his ensemble Pacheco y Su Nuevo Tumbao, featuring trombone-driven arrangements and vocals by Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez.
Musically, the album blends Cuban son, charanga influences, and emerging New York Latin styles, built around tight percussion, brass accents, and dance-oriented rhythms. Tracks like “Cañonazo,” “Como Mango,” and “El Pregonero” reflect both traditional roots and the forward momentum that would define the salsa movement in the following decade.
