Marvin Gaye - What's Going On?
What’s Going On (1971) is Marvin Gaye’s landmark concept album and one of the most influential soul records ever made. Born from the social turmoil of the late 1960s and Gaye’s own personal struggles, the album abandons Motown’s hit-making formula in favor of a deeply introspective, socially conscious suite of songs. Flowing seamlessly from track to track, it blends lush orchestration, jazz-inflected harmonies, gospel urgency, and Gaye’s layered vocal arrangements. Lyrically, it speaks to war, poverty, police brutality, the environment, and spiritual healing, with Gaye embodying both lament and hope. The title track is a timeless plea for compassion and understanding, while songs like Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) and Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) expand the message to global and urban struggles.
